Practice Guidelines: Rape and Sexual Assault Empirical Treatments for PTSD Related to Rape and Sexual Assault

Introduction
There are several treatments available for rape victims. This brief will provide a limited review of available treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with rape and/or sexual assault. The focus of this review is on treatments with demonstrated empirical support.

Assessment
Before effective treatment can be implemented with rape victims, a thorough assessment must be conducted. The assessment should entail a detailed trauma history, including information about the lifetime number and types of trauma experienced by the victim, as well as an evaluation of trauma characteristics, such as whether the person experienced life threat or injury during the rape--factors that are associated with increased PTSD.

It is important that trauma-screening questions are direct and behaviorally specific. For example, questions that use legal terms (e.g., "Have you ever been raped?") yield lower endorsement rates than questionnaires that use behaviorally specific terms (e.g., "Has a man or boy ever made you have sex by using force or threatening to harm you or someone close to you") (Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987). It is also essential that clinicians assess for disorders that co-occur with PTSD, such as major depression, panic disorder, and substance abuse.

Finally, it is important to assess factors that may influence adjustment, such as social support, coping skills, and available resources. For a more detailed description of assessment of trauma and PTSD instruments, please refer to Research Tools and Resources, Screening Measures for Violence.

Treatment of PTSD Related to Sexual Assault and Rape

There have been several reviews of treatment for rape and sexual assault (e.g., Falsetti, 1997--civilian PTSD treatment is reviewed; Foa, Rothbaum & Steketee, 1993; Foa & Rothbaum, 1998) that provide the primary material for this web brief. The interested reader should consult these sources for more information.

In general, treatments that are effective in reducing PTSD symptoms associated with rape and sexual assault are behavioral and cognitive behavioral. This is not to say that other treatments are ineffective. However, empirical studies must be conducted to determine efficacy. The following treatments are reviewed: stress inoculation training, prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, multiple channel exposure therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing.

Stress Inoculation Training

Stress inoculation training (SIT) is a behavioral treatment developed by Meichenbaum (1974) and adapted by Kilpatrick, Veronen, & Resick (1982) to treat the fear and anxiety symptoms often experienced by rape victims. SIT consists of three phases: education, skill building, and application.

During the education phase, individuals learn how fear develops as a learned response to trauma; they learn to identify cues in the environment that trigger fear (e.g., dark places that resemble the location of the sexual assault; being alone); and they learn relaxation exercises such as progressive muscle relaxation (PMR).

In the skill- building phase, clients learn to control their fear reactions via exercises designed to reduce physiological sensations (e.g., diaphragmatic breathing, PMR) and fearful thoughts (e.g., thought stopping, mental rehearsal, guided self-talk, and role playing) (Falsetti, 1997).

In the application phase, clients apply the skills they have learned to engage in fearful behavior, control self-criticism and manage avoidance behavior. Clients are taught to reward themselves for their progress.

SIT usually takes 10-14 sessions. Several studies have shown SIT to be beneficial for female rape victims. Two uncontrolled studies found that SIT was effective in reducing fear, intrusion, and avoidance responses in a group of female rape victims (Kilpatrick et al., 1982- Veronen & Kilpatrick, 1982). A controlled study (Resick, Jordan, Girelli, Hutter, & Marhoefer-Dvorak, 1988) also showed that SIT produced improvements in rape-related fear and anxiety compared to a wait-list control condition. Finally, SIT has been shown to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms in rape victims compared to a wait-list control condition (Foa, Rothbaum, Riggs, & Murdoch, 1991).

Prolonged Exposure

Prolonged Exposure (PE), also known as flooding, is a form of exposure therapy that is based on learning and information processing theories. One of the primary goals of PE is to have individuals repeatedly confront fearful images and memories of their traumatic event so that fear and anxiety decrease (Falsetti, 1997; Foa & Rothbaum, 1998).

During PE, the therapist helps the individual recount the trauma memory in an objectively safe environment (therapist office). Clients are encouraged to describe their rape experience in detail. The oral narrative is repeated several times during each session to reduce fear associated with the memory. Clients also are asked to tape record sessions and listen to the tapes to facilitate exposure. In general, the technique is similar to watching a frightening movie repeatedly. Although at first the movie may be very scary, eventually, after repeated viewing (i.e., 20 times), it is not as scary.

As part of exposure, clients are also asked to confront situations that are not dangerous but that have been associated with danger at the time of the trauma (e.g., dating, going out with friends- dark places). This is called in-vivo exposure, as it generally involves exposure to objects or situations in real life, whereas recounting the thoughts, memories, or images of the rape is called imaginal exposure (Falsetti, 1997).

PE has been shown to be an effective treatment for rape victims with PTSD. PE has been shown to be superior to no treatment, traditional counseling, and SIT in reducing PTSD symptoms in a group of rape victims (Foa et al., 1991). Foa, Hearst-Ikeda, and Perry (1995) also found that brief PE (in combination with relaxation training and cognitive techniques) applied shortly following sexual assault decreased PTSD symptoms in recently assaulted rape victims. More recently, Foa et al. (1999) compared PE, SIT, and their combination in a group of women who had experienced sexual or physical assault and met criteria for PTSD. Results showed that at follow-up, PE was superior to SIT and PE-SIT on measures of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and adjustment. It should be noted, however, that the exposure component of SIT was left out in this study (so as not to confound the individual treatments), which may have reduced the effectiveness of SIT.

Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a multicomponent treatment package developed by Resick and Schnicke (1993) for treatment of rape victims suffering from PTSD and depression. CPT is based on an information-processing model and combines elements of exposure therapy and cognitive restructuring.

The goal of CPT is to help integrate the rape by processing emotions and confronting cognitive distortions and maladaptive beliefs concerning the rape. Exposure involves writing narratives of the rape in detail and reading the narratives aloud in session and for homework. Clients write about the meaning of the rape, and themes of safety, trust, power, esteem, and intimacy are addressed. Clients are provided basic education about feelings, given information about how self-statements affect emotions, and are encouraged to identify "stuck points" (i.e., inadequately processed emotions about the trauma) in their narratives. Specific cognitive strategies are used to challenge maladaptive beliefs about the rape (e.g., self blame), helping the victim accommodate her experience in a healthy manner and maintain a balanced and realistic perception of the world.

CPT can be conducted in individual or group format and completed in 12 weekly sessions. In an uncontrolled trial of CPT, Resick and Schnicke (1992) reported significant improvements on measures of PTSD and depression in female sexual assault victims compared to a wait-list control condition. For the CPT condition, rates of PTSD went from a pretreatment rate of 90% to a posttreatment rate of 0%. Rates of major depression also decreased from 62% to 42% (see Figure 1 -
Adobe Acrobat required to view or print this document). A large controlled study is currently underway to further test this treatment.

Multiple Channel Exposure Therapy

Multiple channel exposure therapy (MCET) is a treatment adapted from CPT (Resick & Schnicke, 1992), SIT (Kilpatrick et al., 1982), and Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic (Barlow & Craske, 1988). MCET is used to treat both panic attacks and PTSD, conditions that often co-occur in rape victims. MCET was originally developed for the treatment of civilian trauma in general (e.g., domestic violence, physical assault, rape), and may be adapted for rape victims specifically.

Because exposure therapy may cause initial high levels of physiological arousal (i.e., panic symptoms), individuals who experience panic attacks may not be able to tolerate this treatment initially. Thus, MCET focuses on panic symptom reduction before trauma exposure work begins. Clients are provided education about panic and trauma, taught diaphragmatic breathing exercises to reduce panic, and learn methods to counteract negative and distorted thinking.

Individuals are then instructed to bring about panic symptoms through structured exposure exercises, such as tensing one's muscles, holding one's breath, spinning in a chair, hyperventilating, and shaking one's head from side to side. Clients gradually learn that the sensations they fear (i.e., panic symptoms) are not actually harmful or dangerous, but rather the interpretations of these symptoms are problematic. Following successful panic reduction, individuals begin writing about their rape following the procedures outlined in CPT. Cognitive strategies are also adapted from CPT to facilitate emotional processing of the trauma. Finally, in vivo exposure to environmental cues associated with the rape (e.g., sights, sounds, smells, locations) is conducted after the rape has been processed emotionally.

MCET lasts 12-weeks and can be conducted in individual or group format. Although data await publication, preliminary evidence shows that MCET is effective in reducing both PTSD and panic symptoms in female civilian trauma victims (see Figure 2 -
Adobe Acrobat required to view or print this document) compared to a minimal attention control group (Falsetti & Resnick, 1998). Among women who received MCET in a group format, rates of PTSD went from a pretreatment rate of 100% to a posttreatment rate of 8.3%. Rates of panic attacks also decreased from a pretreatment rate of 100% to 50% one-month posttreatment. Treatment studies specifically with sexual assault and rape victims are needed.

Summary

There are several treatments available for the treatment of rape-related PTSD. Prior to treatment, it is essential to conduct a thorough assessment, including a detailed trauma history, event characteristics, comorbid psychiatric conditions, and factors influencing post-rape adjustment. The majority of treatments for rape-related PTSD with demonstrated empirical support are behavioral or cognitive-behavioral. Studies show that PE and SIT are effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD in female rape victims. Moreover, combination treatments, such as CPT and MCET, appear to be promising interventions for reducing rape related-PTSD, but await further empirical scrutiny. Finally, EMDR enjoys modest empirical support for the treatment of rape-related PTSD, but it is unclear at this time the specific mechanisms responsible for its efficacy.

An Early Treatment for PTSD in Women Who Have Been Raped Reducing the Likelihood of PTSD in Rape Victims

Women who are raped are at high risk to develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the early treatment for PTSD for women who have been raped may be helpful in reducing the likelihood that the disorder develops.
Anywhere between 12 and 15% of women have experienced a rape at some point in their lifetime, and each year, it is estimated that approximately 683,000 women will be raped.
Women who have experienced a rape are at high risk for a number of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The experience of a rape is also strongly linked to the development of PTSD. In fact, it has been found that 31 to 57% of women who have experienced a rape also have PTSD at some point thereafter.
Given the negative mental health consequences of experiencing a rape, it may be important to intervene early on in an attempt to reduce the likelihood that PTSD or other mental health problems develop.

An Early Intervention

A group of researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina and at the Boston VA developed a brief intervention that can be provided to women during the routine medical and forensic examination that many receive after being raped.
The intervention is delivered through a 17-minute video that can be played during the examination. The first part of the video is designed to help reduce distress associated with the examination. It describes the examination and tells people what to expect. The video also shows a person going through and coping with the examination.
The second part of the video provides information on how people may react following the experience of a rape. It explains the types of symptoms that may arise after rape. In addition, information on effective coping skills for dealing with these symptoms are also provided.

Effectiveness of the Video Intervention

To determine the success of the video intervention in reducing the likelihood of mental health problems developing after the rape, researchers used it during the medical and forensic examinations of a group of women and adolescent girls who had been sexually assaulted in the past 72 hours.
The video intervention was found to only be effective for women or girls who had been raped before. These individuals reported less severe PTSD symptoms and depression 6 weeks later than those who did not have the video intervention.
You may be asking why the intervention did not work for everyone. It may be that women or girls who have been raped before represent more severe cases and could be at greater risk for PTSD. Therefore, the intervention may be more effective for this group of people.

The Importance of Early Action

If you have experienced a rape, it is very important to take steps early on to prevent the likelihood that PTSD or other mental health difficulties develop. In addition, given that physical injuries or other medical problems (such as sexually transmitted diseases) may result from a rape, it is very important to obtain immediate medical care. The United States Department of Health and Human Services provides information on sexual assault, as well as information on what to do if you have been sexually assaulted.

Justin Bieber's Haircut, As Analyzed by Wendy Williams

Justin Bieber is loved (and hated) for his hair. On Monday, he made a big change — Justin Bieber got a haircut! This is truly the haircut heard ’round the world. Check out below for Justin Bieber haircut pictures. Personally, I think he’s done well dropping the girly hairdo and going with a more manly style.

Justin Bieber's new hair style is the talk of the internet after the teen showed off his new hair do on twitter.

On 'The Wendy Williams Show' Wendy previews a picture of Bieber's new haircut. The pop star cut his hair yesterday, trading his bowl-cut locks for a haircut that's short on the sides and curly on the top.

And for those who want to own a piece of Bieber, his hair trimmings will be auctioned off for charity! lol

As Wendy shows the pic, she explains there are othere that
do Bieber's new look more justice. "This picture right here is not the most flattering vantage point ... This one looks a little fussy," she said, adding that Bieber's hair looks like it underwent a session with a curling iron. "But there's other shots of it that show it's really quite flattering on him."

Amber Rose May Be Pregnant With Fabolous’ Baby [RUMOR]

Kanye’s former arm-piece Amber Rose is reportedly pregnant, and the daddy is none other than Fabolous.

Here’s what I found out from mediatakeout.com:

According to a ROCK SOLID insider, Fab and Amber have been seeing each other OFF AND ON for about a year (yeah, even when she was seeing Kanye). The insider, who is CLOSE friends with Amber told MediaTakeOut.com, “She told me and [other people] that she’s pregnant.”

The “couple” was spotted arriving at Juliet Supper Club together with a couple of friends a few weeks ago. A few hours later, the pair went their separate ways with Amber leaving the Chelsea hotspot at 3 am, and Fab departing around 4 am. Making it seem as though they left “separately.”

Fab has spent the last few years living with his girlfriend, celebrity stylist Emily Bustamente, with whom he has a two-year-old son.

20 Things Men Don’t Know About Women

A friend of mine, a guy who used to occasionally step out on his woman and hook up with other girls, had the strangest theory about the female species.

“Women don’t cheat,” he told me, when I asked if he was ever worried she was doing the same thing to him. “It’s just not in their nature.” I just laughed. Of course, I was not at all surprised when he found out she’d been two-timing him for most of their relationship after their inevitable breakup, but he was completely shocked.

There are of course many things that men don’t know about women, mainly because we don’t want them to know, and so we try and keep them hidden really well. But during my two and a half years of interviewing countless ladies for Maxim‘s sex section, I discovered that there are many, many more things that we ladies keep hidden from men ...

When you’re not around, we fart. The longer, the louder and the stinker, the more enjoyable.

1. As soon as we are alone in the house—husband leaves for the office, kids go to school, roommate goes out of town—and we have quality free time knowing no one is going to walk in on us, we masturbate. Sometimes we even just do it if you’re still in the house if that quality free time is never going to come. Usually, it’s while we’re in the bathroom.
2. A good majority of us prefer to pee outside. And in the shower. And sometimes we really just want to do it in the hot tub, but we try to not do that one out of respect for everyone else in there.
3. We pluck stray hairs from our toes, our chin, our lips, moles on the backs of our legs and our nipples. And we really, really enjoy plucking a stubborn ingrown hair. Getting that sucker out is, for some gross reason, such sweet satisfaction.
4. When we’re in love, we smell your clothes or the pillow you were sleeping on when you’re not around. If you were to catch us doing this, we’d be mortified.
5. We’ve all wished that we could be more open and casual about sex from time to time … maybe go to a swingers party, have a threesome or be a dirty stripper for a night, but with no emotional consequences.
6. Deep down we really hope that your guy friends secretly want to sleep with us, and very often we will dress for them and subtly flirt just so they will. We don’t want to bone them; we just want them to want us.
7. We are not insulted in the slightest by those catcalls from construction workers, as long as they aren’t rude or nasty. It’s kind of flattering. We also like it when you get a little jealous, to a degree. Not in an irrational or psycho way, just a bit to show you’re protective and you care.
8. We regularly check in on what our exes are up to via Facebook, emails or texts. As long as we have the technology, they will never be fully out of our lives or minds. This doesn’t mean we still love them; we’re just curious.
9. When we have girls’ nights, we do bad things that you wouldn’t approve of like spill all of your embarrassing secrets, sneak cigarettes or other substances, and drink way more than we let on. Grinding with strangers at a club can also sometimes occur.
10. When you’re not around, we fart. The longer, the louder and the stinkier, the more enjoyable.
11. If you’re really hot or the sex is good, you can be a total idiot and we’ll still date you for a while. But we’ll never marry you. Brains and kindness will always trump sexiness when it comes to marriage material.
12. A lot of times we really like to have sex on the first date to determine whether the chemistry is there and we should have another date. Or sometimes we’re just plain horny and want to get laid. We hate being judged for it.
13. We hate waxing our privates. Hate it, hate it, hate it. But, we like that when it’s cleaned up you go down on us more readily. In a perfect world, you would go down on us with regularity on naturally poofy pubes.
14. When a guy says he doesn’t want kids, it’s really a dealbreaker for almost every woman who is still of child-bearing years.
15. The majority of us don’t really care about how much money you have or make as long as you are kind and emotionally generous and work hard. Laziness and lack of motivation is inherently unsexy.
16. A lot of us are fakers … when it comes to our love of sports and being outdoorsy.
17. We love flaws on guys. A little belly, gray hairs, even a receding hairline. It reminds us that we all have body issues and that we shouldn’t be so insecure or hard on ourselves. Being human is cool. But being whiny about your paunch or constantly fussing over your gray temples is as annoying as us always asking, “Does this make me look fat?”
18. During sex, we’re usually thinking about something other than you. A gross and pervy situation, another man, being dominated … who knows, but we always, always fantasize. It doesn’t mean we’re not sexually attracted to you, we just need the weird mental images to get us off.
19. We don’t consider drunk kissing cheating, as long as we’re the ones doing the drunk kissing. We consider sex with another man cheating.
20. We cherish our independence and “me” time more than you’ll ever know. We say we miss you, but are often secretly glad you’re going so we can just totally relax and be ourselves. But we still love it when you come back.

Jojo is Back with- "IN THE DARK"

The wait is over. Four years after the release of her sophomore album The High Road, JoJo makes her much-awaited return to music. Not even label drama can stop the 19-year-old songstress from shining bright on “In the Dark,” the first offering from her mixtape Can’t Take That Away From Me, premiering September 7 exclusively on Rap-Up.com.

“I think ‘In the Dark’ is different than anything people have heard from me before,” JoJo says of the song, which was produced by Jordan Gatsby and co-written by JoJo and Gatsby. “It’s a very sensual record and there’s an undertone of sadness to it.”

The track’s experimental sound does not necessarily reflect the material on her upcoming third studio album All I Want Is Everything. Instead, it’s a thank you to her loyal fans who’ve stuck by her throughout the years.

Heidi Montag Sex Tape -- Pre and Post-Op

0820-heidi-montag-getty-2-credit

Sources close to the deal tell us that the proposed Heidi sex tape would include footage from both before "The Hills" star had extensive work done and after. So in some of the footage she probably makes a lot of different facial expressions and in the rest ... not so much.

As we first reported ... Heidi's soon-to-be ex, Spencer Pratt, is shopping around a Heidi sex tape to Vivid Entertainment that supposedly "makes Kim Kardashian look like an amateur."

Lady Gaga Considering New Song with T.I.

Lady Gaga’s highly-anticipated collaboration with T.I. is in limbo. The pop perfectionist may be scrapping the current song she recorded with the rapper so she can create something even more spectacular.

The unnamed T.I.-Gaga record was set to appear on his album King Uncaged, but its future is in jeopardy. “[Gaga] brought it to my knowledge that she would like to top what we already have,” Tip exclusively told Rap-Up.com. “That being said, I don’t know if that’s going to be a keeper or if that’s going to be one-upped or what not.”

The King of the South considers the megastar to be “a phenomenal talent and a wonderful lady,” joking that he had to beg to score some of her precious time. “I begged on hands and knees, please!” he laughed.

T.I. explained how their paths crossed when Rap-Up TV interviewed him at the MTV Movie Awards in June. “I worked with the producer RedOne and made it known that I was interested in working with her and the enthusiasm was shared, and we were able to get it done.”

In addition to Gaga, Tip also mentioned that he was recently in the studio with Kanye West in Hawaii. “It went wonderfully,” he said of their sessions. “We recorded six to seven songs in two to three days.”

New Singles: Keri Hilson – ‘Breaking Point’

Fellas, don’t cross Keri Hilson. The blonde bombshell is tired of the excuses and has reached her “Breaking Point,” as she sings on the first single from her sophomore album No Boys Allowed, due later this year. The vintage-sounding record was written by Keri and produced by Timbaland. A video will be shot in Atlanta in early September.

“Keri’s intense focus on No Boys Allowed has been inspiring to both Timbaland and I, in and out of the studio,” says Zone 4 President Polow Da Don, who also co-executive produced the project. “This will definitely be one of the best albums of 2010/2011.”

Listen to Miss Keri’s ladies’ anthem below and tell us what you think!

Eminem Back at No. 1, ‘Recovery’ Goes Double Platinum

Eminem has a lot to be thankful for this summer. The Detroit rapper reclaimed his spot atop the Billboard 200 albums chart this week with his seventh studio effort Recovery.

The disc, initially released in June, also achieves its eighth consecutive week of selling at least 100,000 units, bringing its grand total to a whopping 2.1 million copies. As a result of the surge in sales, Slim Shady’s latest album earns double platinum status.

To date, Recovery is the second best-selling album of 2010 behind Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (2.5 million). Besides his album accolades, Em’s Rihanna-assisted single “Love the Way You Lie” also moves into the No. 1 position on the Digital Songs chart.

At this point last year, no albums had sold more than two million units, according to Billboard. Six have reached the million mark this year, including Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond, which went platinum this week after selling an additional 15,000 copies.

Single Covers: Ciara – ‘Speechless’ + ‘Gimmie Dat’

A silhouetted Ciara makes us “Speechless” with the cover for one of two new singles from her forthcoming album Basic Instinct. The-Dream-aided ballad has been chosen as the follow-up to “Ride,” along with the upbeat “Gimmie Dat.”

Chelsea Clinton Weds Longtime Marc Mezvinsky

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton and longtime beau Marc Mezvinsky were wed Saturday "in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts," a 50-acre estate in Rhinebeck, New York, according to her parents.

"We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate the beginning of their life together, and we are so happy to welcome Marc into our family," former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement.

"On behalf of the newlyweds, we want to give special thanks to the people of Rhinebeck for welcoming us and to everyone for their well-wishes on this special day."

The confirmation by the Clintons put to rest a slew of speculation on where and when the nuptials would take place.

"Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends," the statement said.

The interfaith ceremony -- Clinton is Methodist and Mezvinsky is Jewish -- was led by Rabbi James Ponet and the Rev. William Shillady, the family said. The groom wore a tallit, or prayer shawl, and a yarmulke.

A friend of the couple read the Leo Marks poem "The Life That I Have," according to the family.

The bride -- as predicted -- wore a dress designed by Vera Wang, the family said.

The strapless dress had a swirling silk organza ball skirt and train, and was accented by an embellished belt.

Clinton had been spotted by Women's Wear Daily outside the designer's showroom in New York earlier this week, and Wang was spotted in Rhinebeck on Saturday.

Hillary Clinton wore a pink gown by Oscar de la Renta, the family said.

Jim Valli and his band performed at the reception, and the couple's good friend, Tim Blane, played at the rehearsal dinner, according to the Clinton family. The reception was catered by The St. Regis, the rehearsal dinner by Blue Ribbon.

Hundreds of curious onlookers -- along with hordes of reporters and cameramen -- gathered Saturday at the main intersection of the tiny New York town in hopes of catching a glimpse of celebrities and dignitaries attending the wedding.

Well-heeled wedding guests wearing floor-length gowns and tuxedos were seen boarding shuttles to take them to what one event planner billed as "the wedding of the century."

Storefront windows displayed signs reading "Congratulations Marc & Chelsea" and similar messages.

Nigerian Constitution amendment inconclusive —Sagay

A constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has said that the real work on the amendment of the country’s constitution is yet to commence.

Sagay, who stated this as a guest lecturer at the third Michael Opeyemi Bamidele birthday lecture in Lagos on Tuesday, also accused members of the National Assembly of abandoning the interest of the nation for their selfish motives.

The lecture was titled, “The status and role of a legislature in a democratic society” and was part of the activities to mark the 47th birthday of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele.

The lecture was organised by friends of the commissioner just as Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Adenrele Adeniran-Ogunsanya attended the event.

Other guests include the chairman of the event, Dr. Amos Akingba; the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu; his colleague from Iyin-Ekiti, in Ekiti State, Oba Ademola Ajakaiye; Action Congress governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and member of House of Representatives, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai.

According to Sagay, the glaring failure of the National Assembly members to address the crucial issue of true federalism has made mockery of the whole exercise.

He said, “In my view, the real work on the amendment or alteration of the constitution is yet to be commenced.

“From all indications, such work will not be undertaken by the present National Assembly, it will be the task of a future one.

Sagay said instead of serving the people for whom they ought to be representing at the National Assembly, the legislatures were engaged in the pursuit of self-interest to a degree that could only be regarded as shocking.

N4bn cocaine haul: Enugu lawmakers, NDLEA officials meet

Members of the Enugu State on Tuesday met with the State Commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, A.R. Apeh, over a report in a national daily (not The PUNCH), linking six of its members to the seizure of N4bn worth of cocaine at the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa.

The report had stated that the Tin Can Island Police Command claimed that six Enugu lawmakers were linked to the importation of over 450kg of the illicit substance.

Apeh, who was accompanied to the assembly complex by another top official of the NDLEA, met with the 24 lawmakers in a closed door session.

At the end of the one-hour meeting, the Speaker, Mr. Eugene Odo, told journalists that the lawmakers would investigate the matter.

The chairman of the House Committee on Information, Mr. Marcel Njeze, who later addressed a press conference, asked the newspaper which reported the story to furnish the assembly with the names of members linked to the drug scandal or face legal action.

“We have contacted the director and another member of the drug agency in Enugu and they told us that no such file was transferred to them. They even stated that no arrest had been made over the issue

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to a publication linking six members of the house of assembly to an illicit drug importation amounting to N4bn.”

“Fortunately, today is our day of sitting. And fortunately also, the 24 members of the state house of assembly were present. So, we decided to enquire from every member if there was anyway in which any of them was involved in the matter.

“The answer we got was that no member of the Enugu State House of Assembly had anything to do with the importation of cocaine or contraband goods into this country.”

He did not, however, allow journalists access to the NDLEA officials.

DMX Is Going To Jail Again

Rapper DMX is heading back to jail just weeks after serving a four-month stint behind bars for a probation violation.

The gravel-voiced hip-hop star is planning to surrender to authorities and begin serving time in Los Angeles in connection to a reckless driving conviction eight years ago.

TMZ.com reports DMX was placed on probation after he pleaded no contest to the crime, which he has since violated and has been ordered to serve 90 days behind bars.

The rapper's manager insists her client, real name Earl Simmons, is "focused" on taking care of all of his past legal issues so he can move on with his life.

Eminem Says: 'I Don't Know How To Use A Computer'

I can't believe that my mentor and my god-father, Eminem refuses to learn about the ways of the Internet because he'd drive himself mad with the comments of his online critics if he knew how to surf.

The "Stan" rapper admits he has no idea about navigating cyberspace - and he'd like to leave it that way.

He employs someone to keep his Twitter.com account updated and only checks out YouTube.com clips when friends email them to him.

He says, "If I learn how (to use a computer), I'm going to be on that b--ch all day looking at comments about me, and it's going to drive me crazy."

Wyclef Jean Once Again Considers Running For President Of Haiti

Wyclef Jean is reconsidering running for president of his devastated homeland Haiti, according to his charitable foundation.

The former Fugees star has been instrumental in ensuring the Haitians left homeless by the massive earthquake in January have aid, and has built temporary shelters through his Yele Haiti organization.

Jean's dedication and service prompted many to call for him to step into politics, but he initially shrugged off the idea, saying, "If I take a job being a president, I can't do as much as I'm doing for my country."

However, according to CNN, the star has filled out the relevant paperwork in case he wants to put himself forward as a presidential candidate in the 2010 elections, pondering during a telephone interview, "I can't sing forever."

But a statement from his foundation adds that Jean is yet to come to a final decision: "Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward. At this time, Wyclef Jean has not announced his intent to run for Haitian president. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately."

Rihanna Connected With Eminem's Song About An Abusive Relationship

Rihanna was drawn to duet with Eminem on his powerful new track "Love The Way You Lie" because she "connected" with the song's references to an abusive relationship.

The "Umbrella" hitmaker lends her vocals to the rapper's new single, which focuses on domestic violence, and features the lyrics, "I laid hands on her/I'll never stoop so low again/I guess I don't know my own strength."

And Rihanna admits she instantly "understood" the song because of her experiences with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, who famously attacked the singer last year.

She tells Access Hollywood, "It's something that, you know, we've both experienced...on different sides, different ends of the table. He (Eminem) pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence and it's something that people don't have a lot of insight on.

"I knew if he sent me a record there must be something to it. It couldn't just be, 'Oh, Duh! She was in that relationship so we have to get her.' The lyrics were so deep, so beautiful and intense. It's something that I understood, something I connected with."

Foxy Brown Busts Out at B.B. King’s....lookin' soooooo! ugh!

Foxy Brown may be making headlines for her questionable behavior, but on Sunday she turned the focus back to her music during a rare concert at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City’s Times Square. The Ill Na Na performed old-school classics such as “Hot Spot,” “Get Me Home,” and “Oh Yeah” with special guests Spragga Benz, Cormega, and AZ.

The gig comes after the rap diva’s arrest last week for allegedly violating a protection order by bad-mouthing a neighbor (the one she was accused of hitting with a BlackBerry in 2007) and then flashing her bottom. Foxy maintains her innocence. “That is what we think this is about, people kind of jealous and hating,” said her manager Bernadette Brennan.
